Crossbars are usually 5, 6, 8, or 9 mm twisted round bars. One common setup is the "19‑4" spacing – that means bearing bars 19 mm apart and crossbars 4 mm thick. This gives roughly 80% open area, so water and small debris fall through, but you still get good foot grip.
